چکیده

High-resolution IRAS maps are used to search for the presence of stellar-wind bow-shocks around high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs). Their high space velocities, recently confirmed with Hipparcos observations, combined with their strong stellar winds should result in the formation of wind bow-shocks. Except for the already known bow-shock around Vela X-1 (Kaper et al. 1997), we do not find convincing evidence for a bow-shock around any of the other HMXBs. Also in the case of (supposedly single) OB-runaway stars, only a minority appears to be associated with a bow-shock (Van Buren et al. 1995). We investigate why wind bow-shocks are not detected for the majority of these OB-runaway systems: is this due to the IRAS sensitivity, the system's space velocity, the stellar-wind properties , or the height above the galactic plane? It turns out that none of these suggested causes can explain the low detection rate (∼40 %). We propose that the conditions of the inter-stellar medium mainly determine whether a wind bow-shock is formed or not. In hot, tenuous media (like inside galactic superbubbles) the sound speed is high (∼100 km s −1), such that many runaways move at subsonic velocity through a low-density medium, thus preventing the formation of an observable bow-shock. Superbubbles are expected (and observed) around OB associations, where the OB-runaway stars were once born. Turning the argument around, we use the absence (or presence) of wind bow-shocks around OB runaways to probe the physical conditions of the interstellar medium in the solar neighbourhood. Numerical simulations of wind bow shocks produced by runaway OB stars

We present the results of a study focused on the morphology and dynamical evolution of wind bow shocks produced by massive runaway stars in the diffuse interstellar medium. A revision of current analytical models describing the shape and physical parameters of a wind bow shock is proposed, motivated by the recognition that the shocked stellar wind does not need to incorporate into the bow shock...

X - ray study of bow shocks in runaway stars ⋆

Massive runaway stars produce bow shocks through the interaction of their winds with the interstellar medium, with the prospect for particle acceleration by the shocks. These objects are consequently candidates for non-thermal emission. Our aim is to investigate the X-ray emission from these sources. We observed with XMM-Newton a sample of 5 bow shock runaways, which constitutes a significant i...

Bow Shocks around Pulsars and Neutron Stars

Pulsar wind nebulae are now well established as important probes both of neutron stars’ relativistic winds and of the surrounding interstellar medium. Amongst this diverse group of objects, pulsar bow shocks have long been regarded as an oddity, only seen around a handful of rapidly moving neutron stars. However, recent efforts at optical, radio and X-ray wavelengths have identified many new pu...

High-mass X-ray Binaries and Ob- Runaway Stars

High-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) represent an important phase in the evolution of massive binary systems. HMXBs provide unique diagnostics to test massive-star evolution, to probe the physics of radiationdriven winds, to study the process of mass accretion, and to measure fundamental parameters of compact objects. As a consequence of the supernova explosion that produced the neutron star (or bl...

Identifying Bow Shocks with Hα Allsky Surveys

OB–stars have the highest luminosities and strongest stellar winds of all stars, which enables them to interact strongly with their surrounding ISM, thus creating bow shocks. These offer us an ideal opportunity to learn more about the ISM. They were first detected and analysed around runaway OB–stars using the IRAS allsky survey by van Buren et al. (1995). Using the geometry of such bow shocks ...
